Visa, immigration, and customs information

Information last reviewed October 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Vietnam's largest metropolis, welcomes millions of international visitors annually. Entry requirements are governed by Vietnamese immigration law, and all travelers must possess a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay. The primary consideration for most visitors is whether they require a visa, as Vietnam's policy varies significantly by nationality. Upon arrival at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), travelers will proceed through immigration, customs, and health screening. The process is generally straightforward but can involve queues, during peak travel seasons. Travelers should prepare all necessary documents in advance, including proof of onward travel and sufficient funds for their stay, although these are not always checked. It is important to ensure your visa type and validity match your travel plans exactly, as overstaying results in significant fines. While many nationalities can obtain visas on arrival with a pre-arranged approval letter, this process requires coordination with a sponsoring agency before travel and is only available for air arrivals. Before your trip, verify the latest entry requirements, as policies can change. Ensure your passport has blank pages for stamps, and consider having digital and physical copies of important documents like your visa, passport photo page, and travel insurance. Familiarizing yourself with basic customs regulations regarding currency, electronics, and prohibited items will also help ensure a smooth entry process.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Vietnam's visa policy is not universal; requirements depend entirely on the traveler's nationality. Some countries enjoy visa-free entry, many can apply for an eVisa, and others must obtain a traditional visa from an embassy or consulate. The 'Visa on Arrival' (VOA) is a common but often misunderstood option that requires pre-approval before travel.

Visa-Free Entry
Varies by country: 14, 15, 30, 45, or 90 days.

Citizens of select countries can enter Vietnam for tourism without a visa for a limited period.

Includes
United Kingdom France Germany Italy Spain Japan South Korea Denmark Norway Sweden Finland Russia Belarus

Visa-free periods are for tourism only and are non-extendable. Stays are typically single-entry; you must leave Vietnam to reset the clock. Always confirm the exact duration for your specific passport, as bilateral agreements can change.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
90 days, single or multiple entry.

The Vietnam eVisa is an official document that allows entry for tourism or business, obtained online before travel.

Includes
United States Australia Canada India Netherlands New Zealand
How to Apply: Apply online through the official Vietnam Immigration Portal. Requires a digital passport photo and passport scan. Typical processing is 3-5 working days, but apply at least 2 weeks before travel.
Cost: Approximately $25 USD.

The eVisa is valid for entry at all international airports (including SGN), land borders, and seaports listed on the approval. You must print a copy to present upon arrival. Double-check all details (name, passport number, DOB, entry/exit dates) for accuracy.

Visa Required
Varies by visa type (e.g., 1-month or 3-month single/multiple entry).

Nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry or the eVisa must apply for a visa stamp at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate before travel.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Requires application form, passport, photos, and fee. Processing time varies (often 5-7 working days).

This is the most secure method for those ineligible for other options. For those flying into HCMC, the 'Visa on Arrival' (VOA) is an alternative: you must obtain an 'Approval Letter' online from a Vietnam-based travel agency, present it at the VOA counter at SGN airport, pay a stamping fee, and receive your visa. This is only for air arrival.

Arrival Process

Upon landing at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), follow signs to Immigration. The process typically involves health screening, passport control, baggage claim, and customs.

1
Health Screening & Arrival Card
You may pass through a thermal scanner. Fill out an arrival/departure card (if required; sometimes integrated into the process). Have your passport and visa ready.
2
Immigration (Passport Control)
Queue at the 'Foreign Passport' counters. Present your passport, visa (or eVisa printout/approval letter for VOA), and completed arrival card. Your photo and fingerprints may be taken. The officer will stamp your passport with an entry stamp.
3
Baggage Claim
Proceed to the baggage claim hall, find your flight's carousel, and collect your luggage.
4
Customs
Walk through the Green Channel (nothing to declare) or Red Channel (items to declare). Your baggage may be scanned or inspected.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least six months beyond your entry date and have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
Vietnam Visa
Either a stamp/sticker from an embassy, a printed eVisa, or a Visa on Arrival approval letter + photos + stamping fee.
Proof of Onward Travel
A flight ticket showing your departure from Vietnam within your visa validity. May be requested by immigration or airline at check-in.
Accommodation Details
Address of your first hotel or host in Vietnam. May be requested on the arrival card or by immigration.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents (passport, visa, boarding pass) easily accessible in a folder. Fill out the arrival card on the plane if provided.
For Visa on Arrival, go directly to the 'Landing Visa' counter *before* passport control. Have your approval letter, completed application form, two passport photos, and USD cash for the stamping fee ready.
Be polite and patient with immigration officers. Answer questions clearly and concisely.
Use the airport's free Wi-Fi to contact your hotel or driver if you are delayed at immigration.

Customs & Duty-Free

Vietnamese customs regulations restrict or prohibit the import of certain goods. Travelers must declare items exceeding duty-free allowances or any restricted/prohibited items.

Alcohol
1.5 liters of alcoholic beverages above 22% alcohol, or 2 liters of beverages below 22% alcohol.
Traveler must be aged 18 or over.
Tobacco
200 cigarettes, or 100 cigars, or 250 grams of tobacco.
Traveler must be aged 18 or over.
Currency
VND 15,000,000 or foreign currency equivalent to USD 5,000 or more.
Amounts at or above this threshold must be declared upon entry and exit using a customs declaration form.
Gifts/Goods
Personal belongings and gifts with a total value not exceeding VND 10,000,000.
Commercial goods or items exceeding this value are subject to duty.

Prohibited Items

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics - severe penalties including death sentence.
  • Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and military equipment - without special permission.
  • Pornographic materials - illegal to import.
  • Items against Vietnamese culture and traditions (e.g., certain publications).

Restricted Items

  • Medications - psychotropic drugs. Bring a doctor's prescription and only a reasonable quantity for personal use.
  • Plants, seeds, soil, animals, and animal products - require phytosanitary or veterinary certificates.
  • Cultural artifacts and antiques - require export permits from country of origin and may require Vietnamese import permits.
  • Wireless transmitters (certain types) - may require approval.

Health Requirements

There are few mandatory health requirements for entry into Vietnam, but several vaccinations are strongly recommended due to local health risks.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations (MMR, Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Varicella, Polio, Influenza)
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Japanese Encephalitis (for long-term stays or rural travel)
  • Rabies (for adventure travelers, animal handlers)
  • Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for travel to rural areas, but not typically for HCMC.

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, complete travel health insurance is highly recommended. Medical treatment for foreigners can be expensive, and insurance should cover hospitalization, medical evacuation, and COVID-19 related treatment. Some airlines or tour operators may require proof of insurance.

Current Health Requirements: As of October 2024, there are no COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or quarantine requirements for entry into Vietnam. However, this is subject to change. Always check the latest health advisories from your home country and the Vietnamese Ministry of Health before departure.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport. If traveling with only one parent, with neither parent, or with a different surname, it is advisable to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) authorizing travel. This is not always requested but can prevent delays at immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Pets (dogs, cats) require an import permit from the Vietnam Department of Animal Health, a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months prior to entry), and a veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel. Pets may be quarantined upon arrival for up to 45 days if requirements are not met.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas (visa-free, eVisa, standard tourist visa) are generally non-extendable. To stay longer, you must leave Vietnam (e.g., to a neighboring country) and apply for a new visa to re-enter. Alternatively, before your current visa expires, you can apply within Vietnam to change your visa status (e.g., to a business or investment visa) through a sponsoring company or agency, which is a complex process.
